Blackjack Basic Strategy: An Introduction
By BYBET Team
Blackjack is one of the few casino games where the decisions you make affect the expected outcome. "Basic strategy" is the name for a set of mathematically derived decisions that tell you whether to hit, stand, double down or split, based on your hand and the dealer's visible card. It does not guarantee wins, and the house still has an edge, but it reduces that edge compared with playing on instinct.
The goal of the game
You play against the dealer, not against other players. The aim is to finish with a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Number cards count at face value, face cards count as 10, and an ace counts as 1 or 11. A two-card 21 is a blackjack.
The house edge in blackjack comes mainly from one rule: if you bust, you lose, even if the dealer later busts too.
What basic strategy is
Basic strategy was worked out by analysing every combination of player hand and dealer up-card and finding the decision with the best long-run result. Computer simulations later confirmed and refined it. The exact chart depends on the rules at the table, such as how many decks are used and whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17.
Basic strategy assumes no card counting. It simply uses the cards you can see.
Key ideas for hard hands
A hard hand has no ace, or has an ace that must count as 1. Some widely used guidelines, under common rules:
- 8 or less: always hit.
- 11: double down against most dealer up-cards.
- 10: double down when the dealer shows 2 to 9.
- 12: stand against dealer 4, 5 or 6; otherwise hit.
- 13 to 16: stand against dealer 2 to 6; hit against 7 or higher.
- 17 or more: stand.
The logic is that dealer up-cards of 2 to 6 are "weak", because the dealer must keep drawing and has a higher chance of busting. Against 7 or higher, the dealer is more likely to finish with a strong total, so you need to improve your hand.
Key ideas for soft hands
A soft hand contains an ace counted as 11, such as A-6 (soft 17). You cannot bust by taking one more card, so you can play more aggressively.
- Soft 13 to 17: hit or double depending on the dealer's card; never stand on soft 17 or lower in most charts.
- Soft 18: stand against 2, 7 or 8; double against 3 to 6 where allowed; hit against 9, 10 or ace.
- Soft 19 and 20: stand in nearly all cases.
Key ideas for pairs
When you have two cards of the same rank, you can usually split them into two hands, placing a second equal bet.
- Always split aces and 8s.
- Never split 10s or 5s. A pair of 10s is already 20, and a pair of 5s is better played as a 10.
- Other pairs, such as 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s and 9s, depend on the dealer's card and the table rules.
About insurance
When the dealer shows an ace, you may be offered insurance, a side bet that the dealer has blackjack. Basic strategy says to decline insurance, because over time it carries a higher house edge than the main game. The same applies to "even money" offered when you have blackjack against a dealer ace.
Why rules matter
Small rule changes move the house edge. Examples include:
- Whether blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5. A 6:5 payout increases the house edge noticeably.
- Whether the dealer stands or hits on soft 17.
- Whether doubling after splitting is allowed.
- The number of decks in use.
Before playing any table, including live dealer or digital versions, read its rules panel.
What basic strategy can and cannot do
Basic strategy reduces the house edge to a small figure under favourable rules, but it does not make it zero or negative. Short-term results will still swing widely. You can follow the strategy perfectly and lose many hands in a row. It is a way to play the game well, not a way to make money.
Practising without pressure
It helps to keep a printed or on-screen chart nearby while learning. Many players practise with free demo modes where available before playing with money. For more explainers on casino games and odds, the BYBET guides blog collects articles written for adult players in the Philippines.
Recap
- Basic strategy is a set of best decisions for each hand and dealer card.
- Stand more against weak dealer cards (2 to 6) and hit more against strong ones.
- Always split aces and 8s; never split 10s or 5s.
- Decline insurance.
- The house still has an edge; set a budget and stick to it.
